The former police dormitory on Dongming Road (No. 86, Dongming Road, Xinyi District) is planned to become Keelung's first "Design House-86 Design Apartment". Located next to the sedimentation basin of the Tianliao River in Keelung, this four-story former police dormitory had fallen into disrepair as its original residents gradually left. The vacant buildings, with their gray walls and overgrown weeds in the front yard, became a dilapidated structure that other residents would only want to quickly pass by. But all this changed in the summer of 2015. Planned by the Department of Architecture at Tamkang University, the project demonstrated that urban environmental transformation can begin with a small site or a single building, eventually leading to a comprehensive renovation. The involvement and participation of faculty and students from the Department of Architecture at Tamkang University brought a continuous flow of vitality to the community, giving surrounding residents a new perspective and imagination. At the time, faculty and students from the Department of Architecture at Tamkang University utilized their expertise in spatial design, creativity, and limited resources to revitalize a long-neglected space, transforming it into a living room for neighbors. They aspired to create Keelung's first design space that bridged the gap between entrepreneurs and the local community, naming it 86 Design Apartment. Through various workshops and leveraging resources from all sectors to organize lectures and exhibitions, the apartment brought a fresh perspective. The aim was to encourage more young people to return to Keelung and engage with the community, exploring the possibilities of starting businesses back home. 86 Design Apartment: a space that encourages dreams, sharing, and sparking creativity.
