Located behind National Taiwan Ocean University, the Longgang Trail is a cement path winding around the mountain. The path is flat and easy to walk on, with dense forests and a rich ecosystem. It is a recreational trail that the Keelung City Government has been actively developing recently, combining nature, sightseeing, hiking, and butterfly watching. The trail is about 2 kilometers long and is a typical evergreen broad-leaved forest in the low hills. So far, more than 300 species of plants have been found, including red nanmu, island banyan, and penholder tree. The banyan and nanmu species are the main ones. Among them are rare and precious protected frog species, as well as butterflies with a high density of species. It is a good place for hiking, trekking, and wildlife observation.
The Longgang Trail has three entrances: one on the steps of the archery range next to the No. 1 Student Canteen at the National Ocean University, and the other two next to the No. 1 Men's Dormitory. You can reach the highest point of the trail by walking along either side. At the very top, there is a pavilion offering panoramic views of Heping Island and Badouzi Fishing Harbor.
The frogs in the Longgang Trail include the Pangu Toad, Svenhoe's Red Frog, and Radush's Red Frog, which are active almost all year round. In spring, the Mo's Tree Frog and Gu's Red Frog are the main species. In summer, in addition to fireflies fluttering around, there are also black-rimmed toads, small rain frogs, Gund's Red Frog, marsh frogs, face-to-the-sky tree frogs, and white-chinned tree frogs. All kinds of frogs gather together, and different calls rise up, making it quite lively. In winter, it is the season when the Taipei Tree Frog stands out, but its lonely call sounds a bit melancholy.
Around late April to early May each year, National Taiwan Ocean University holds a summer firefly-related ecological exhibition on campus. Some clubs launch photography competitions, while others showcase a series of ecological displays along the Longgang Trail, allowing the public to observe the insect ecology along the trail without having to climb the mountain. The university also accepts reservations for firefly viewing exhibitions on the trail at night. During the summer, the Longgang Trail is the best place to watch fireflies, as fireflies can be easily found scattered around the trail, creating a romantic and poetic atmosphere.
Walking along the Longgang Trail, you can also reach Gangziliao Fortress. In addition, you can also visit Bisha Fishing Port, Badouzi Park, Chaojing Park, and Green Coast, making it a perfect place for families to experience the beauty of nature together.
