The National Museum of Marine Science and Technology (NMSMT) is located in the Badouzi area on the east side of Keelung City. It is bordered by Badouzi and Bisha Fishing Port to the west and the Northeast Coast Scenic Area to the east. Provincial Highway 2 (Coastal Highway) and the Shen'ao Branch Line of the Taiwan Railway pass through the area. The current site for the museum covers approximately 48 hectares, nestled between mountains and the sea, boasting a beautiful environment.
The facilities are divided into thematic pavilions and research and landscape facilities. Thematic pavilions include: a marine science and technology exhibition hall, a marine ecology exhibition hall (aquarium), and a marine theater.
The main pavilion consists of eight exhibition halls and one special exhibition hall, namely the Children's Hall, Deep Sea Exhibition Hall, Deep Sea Image Hall, Marine Culture Hall, Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Hall, Marine Science Hall, and Marine Environment Hall. It introduces marine-related knowledge from multiple perspectives, allowing the public to learn about marine science, ecology, and culture in an entertaining and educational way through cutting-edge interactive exhibits. It also includes an administrative center and a research and collection center.
The Regional Exploration Hall, with the theme "The Ocean Nurtured This Land," showcases the region's marine-themed tourism resources. Through videos, wax models, and tool displays, it introduces the past and present story of Badouzi in Keelung. Divided into three levels—landscape, culture, and industry—it outlines the essence of each level, allowing visitors to be moved, identify with, and look forward to the village at each level, gaining a deeper understanding of the village's culture and historical evolution. Admission is free.
The IMAX 3D Ocean Theater features films primarily focused on educational content related to marine science, environmental protection, and natural ecology. Through advanced 3D technology and highly realistic sound equipment, it provides visitors with an immersive experience. Furthermore, to ensure visitors feel as if they've entered the ocean from the moment they step into the theater lobby, the overall design uses a predominantly blue ocean color scheme, complemented by jellyfish-shaped lights above the lobby, creating a fresh and vibrant atmosphere. Inside the theater, a deep blue ocean ambiance is created, with wave-like bubbles projected onto the walls, immediately immersing visitors in a strong marine atmosphere.
The Marine Ecology Exhibition Hall will showcase the diversity and richness of marine ecology through an aquarium. The hall will be constructed and operated by an external contractor (Qingfu Group - Qingyang Marine Enterprise Co., Ltd. / National Marine Science and Technology Museum franchise team) under a BOT model, and is expected to open at the end of 2016.
The National Museum of Marine Science and Technology (NMSMT) is surrounded by research and landscape facilities, including Badouzi Park, Chaojing Marine Research Center, Environmental Restoration Park, Chaojing Park, and Bisha Fishing Harbor. Visitors can enjoy the famous Badouzi sunset, panoramic views of Keelung Mountain and Jiufen, explore the plains of Lüye, and witness the expansive seascape and sky from different perspectives of the 65 Highland landscape design. Rongyuan's beautiful green tunnel is also a recommended spot for wedding photography and leisurely strolls. Furthermore, the waterway that originally separated the Badouzi Peninsula from the mainland, located in the main museum area, will be reopened, recreating the charm of the former "Bishui Lane" in Badouzi and emphasizing the cultural and environmental characteristics of the Keelung and Badouzi areas. The interaction between the ocean influencing humanity and humanity in turn influencing the ocean can be explained and understood in the most detailed way within and around the NMSMT.
