The "Tamsui-Yilan Ancient Trail" was the main transportation route from Tamsui to Kavalan (present-day Taipei to Yilan) during the Qing Dynasty. Between 1800 and 1900, it was the golden age of Han Chinese migration from western to eastern Taiwan. Besides geographical factors, the Qing government's policies and the resilience of the early settlers continuously left their mark on the surface of northern Taiwan, making this historical trail a testament to this century of development. The Trail traverses four administrative districts in present-day northern Taiwan (New Taipei City, Keelung City, Taipei City, and Yilan County), and most of its trails remain popular hiking routes.
